Educational Purpose

The Five Planet Journey and FivePlanetJourney.com were created to help children and the adults who care for them think and talk about emotional development through stories, metaphors, questions, and educational concepts.

The books and website are intended for educational and psychoeducational purposes.

They are not substitutes for psychological assessment, psychotherapy, medical care, psychiatric care, diagnosis, or individualized professional advice.

The Five Planets Are Developmental Metaphors

Meerkat, Lion, Dog, Chimpanzee, and Elephant Planets provide an accessible language for exploring themes such as:

Safety → Voice → Care → Freedom → Integration

The planets should not be used as diagnostic categories or fixed personality types.

A child or adult should not be labeled a “Meerkat,” “Lion,” “Dog,” “Chimpanzee,” or “Elephant” as though the label defines that person.

People may draw upon different developmental capacities in different situations, relationships, and periods of life.

Every child carries all five planets within them. And so does every adult.

The Five-Stage Framework

The developmental ideas underlying The Five Planet Journey are informed by the author’s clinical training, professional experience, psychoanalytic and developmental traditions, and continuing theoretical work.

The Five-Stage framework is a conceptual developmental model. It should not be interpreted as an established diagnostic system, standardized psychological assessment, or claim that every child develops through an identical sequence at identical ages.

Development is complex and influenced by biological, psychological, relational, cultural, social, and environmental factors.

Parenting and Teaching

Examples and suggestions presented in the books or on this website are intended to encourage reflection and conversation.

They should not be interpreted as individualized recommendations for a particular child, family, classroom, psychological condition, developmental disability, behavioral problem, or clinical situation.

A strategy that is useful for one child or situation may not be appropriate for another.

No Diagnosis From Behavior Alone

A child’s fear, anger, withdrawal, guilt, independence, conflict, sensitivity, or other behavior can have many possible meanings.

The Five Planet framework encourages adults to become curious about what may underlie behavior, but it cannot determine the cause of a particular child’s behavior.

The question:

“What may be trying to grow here?”

is intended as an invitation to thoughtful observation—not as a diagnostic conclusion.

When Professional Help May Be Appropriate

Parents, caregivers, or educators who have significant concerns about a child’s emotional, behavioral, developmental, educational, or physical well-being should seek evaluation or guidance from an appropriately qualified professional who can consider the child’s individual circumstances.

In urgent or emergency situations, appropriate local emergency or professional services should be contacted rather than relying on information from this website.

Author Credentials and Website Content

References to Roland Y. Kim, Ph.D. and his background in clinical psychology describe the author’s education, training, experience, and perspective.

They should not be interpreted as establishing a professional treatment relationship with visitors to this website or readers of the books.

Reading the books, visiting the website, downloading educational resources, or contacting the website does not constitute psychological treatment or individualized clinical consultation.

A Framework for Conversation, Not a Judgment

The purpose of The Five Planet Journey is not to tell children or adults what they are.

It is to provide a language for asking what they may need, what capacities they are developing, and how adults can accompany children as they grow.

The five planets are maps for conversation—not boxes for defining people.
